Semi Flush Ceiling Lights

Ceiling lights are lights that are mounted on the ceiling and are used to provide general illumination. These lights can be of two types, flush mounted and semi flush. A flush mounted light is one where the light is mounted flush with the ceiling, while the semi flush is one where there is a little space between the lighting fixture and the ceiling because the fixture is attached to the ceiling with the aid of a stem.

Both flush as well as semi flush ceiling lights work just as well with the difference being in the personal preferences of the buyer. Although the semi flush hangs a little lower than the ceiling, unless you have a really low one, there should not be a problem with using them. These lights come in various shapes and designs with some being more elaborate than the others. Semi flush lights, by virtue of the fact that they hang free, are a little easier to install than flush mounted ones. The designs are also a little more elaborate since these designs do not have to contend with some of the problems inherent to flush mount fixtures during installation.

Depending on the type of room for which you are looking for a light, either of these would work, with flush mounted lamps being better suited for areas like the bathroom, closet etc. In most other areas, semi flush lamps are better suited as they give good illumination while at the same time being more elaborately designed. Hallways, bedrooms and foyers are good places to hang these lamps.

The only problems as such with semi flush lamps are that they need a little more maintenance than flush mounted ones. Most semi flush lights come with a stem attachment with a bowl shaped fixture under the bulb to diffuse the light. This fixture, simply because of its shape tends to collect dust and dirt on the inside over a period of time and needs periodic cleaning. Although the shape of the fixture is what gives these lamps their distinctive look, there is a downside to everything. Choosing the right design is very important for this very reason.

Semi flush ceiling lights are not cheap by anybody’s standards. Although the starting price is usually around the $50 mark for simple elegantly designed ones, there are more ornate ones that will cost you anywhere between $300 and $500. These lights however cannot be compared with anything else in the market, and if you have the money it is better to think of this as an investment and go for one that you really like. There are lamps that are made from glass that almost look like crystal because of their clarity, and there are ones that even look like miniature chandeliers.

If the right shape is chosen, then there is no problem with maintenance with maybe a wipe off when you change a bulb being all that is required. Most of these lamps, however, are intricately patterned and decorated on the outside, will always be smooth on the inner surface for this reason. There are some lamps that come in an off white color, with brass holdings that give an aged look, which probably requires even less looking after.
Semi flush ceiling lights are a must have for every household, if at least only for the living room where guests are entertained. These lamps add a touch of class and elegance that is required during occasions, and although a bit on the expensive side compared to flush mount fixtures, are well worth the price. Going online to browse through the catalogs of different manufacturers before making up your mind is a good idea as it will give you an idea of the different designs from which you can choose. You can even buy online if the store nearby does not stock what you want.
