Outdoor Lighting

Just imagine, you feel that your home needs a new look; either it’s been too long since any changes have been made, or it’s starting to look a little frayed around the edges, or whatever the reason may be. You call in an interior decorator and he gives you a quote that is way above what you have in mind. You think that you would rather do it yourself and decide to go for a coat of paint with a few judicious decorative additions that will improve the look of your house. You will probably be right here, because if you are willing to spend a little time you can do a better job than most professionals. It is, after all, the difference between a job for him and your own home.

At the end of all your hard work you find out that something is still missing, and although you are happy with what you have done, you are still not completely satisfied. Whether you know it or not, this is because you have concentrated so much on the interiors that you have left the outside unchanged. Yes you have given it a fresh coat of paint, which is why you are even halfway happy, but to get you what you had in your mind when you started out is something else.

This is where Outdoor lighting comes in. Everybody thinks that a couple of lights around the house or in the driveway is sufficient, but you will find out that after everything that you have done to the inside of your house, most people are only going to get a quick look at the outside of your home. Not too many are going to see “the fruits of your labor” so to speak. Although the satisfaction of completion is enough for some, it is not for most of us, we want to show off our possessions. Strategically placed lights in different areas around your house will give you this. Every house will have some portions that are nice to look at, and others that need covering up, and combining an innovative paint scheme with lights that highlight the good areas and shroud the others in darkness is a very good idea. Sometimes not showing everything is actually more effective.

Even if you feel that your home is a plain Jane and does not have any special qualities, there is always something that can be done with a little imagination. For example, painting a different colored border around the windows and highlighting it with an outdoor sconce or two will improve the look dramatically. Instead of highlighting a portion of your house, you could focus a colored light on a tree or a bush that grows close by moving the focus away from your house, yet giving you the required light.

Even if you are living in an apartment, a couple of pendant like lights outside your door will set the tone of your house even before anyone enters. Outdoor lighting systems are not too expensive, and start off at around $20. It is not necessary to purchase the expensive ones, just a couple of very ordinary focus lamps but with low wattage yellow light bulbs will dramatically alter the look. What with low cost, solar powered LED lights flooding the market, you can get a couple of different colored ones for a little over $10 and hang them around your home.

The outside of your home is as important as the inside, and although too many people do not want to spend money on the outside since it is exposed to the weather, putting up a few outdoor lamps will make your house as nice to look at from the outside as from the inside.
