DIY Solar Panels

Renewable energy is becoming big right now, what with increasing power bills and gas prices. If we had had a little foresight we may have gone with the Prius instead of the large SUV that we had purchased, but now we are stuck with a gas guzzler that we are not even able to dispose of at a good rate because nobody wants it.

It is the same case with our home energy. We have become so accustomed to having electrical this and electronic that that we have become dependent on electricity for everything. The power companies, after getting us hooked with all of these and gaining a monopoly have now jacked up their prices knowing that we have no option but to pay.

Solar energy has become a good alternative nowadays, if not to help us to live off the grid, at least to help us reduce our dependence on them. The only problem is that the initial cost of installing them is prohibitively expensive. If you want to install enough solar panels to make you live off the grid, it will cost you in excess of $20,000 which means that you will have to wait decades before it starts paying. For all you know the panels may not even last so long.

This being the case, DIY solar panels look like a good option. Not only do you get the solar panels of your choice, you can pretty much make it any way that you like using any material that you want.

Solar cells are the crux of the whole thing. You cannot make them and they will form the biggest expense. If however you go online you can get quite good quality solar cells very cheap. The rest is just soldering the different panels together and sticking them on to a hard backing to form one large collection plate. You can cover them with sturdy Plexiglas for additional protection if you want to.

There are a number of books that give you instructions on how to make them, and it is a hit or a miss on which one is better than the other. Many of the online books that you get are not worth the money that you pay for them, and are just rehashed versions of information found elsewhere on the net. If you are really interested, go to a bookstore and get one. You have the option of flipping through the pages to find out if it is going to be of much help or not, and even if they cost more, they will also help more.

Don’t be afraid to try, and the easiest way to do this is to start small. Most DIY solar panels are scalable models, which mean that at a later date all you have to do is to make another one and connect it to the existing one. In fact this is probably the best thing for you to do because as you make more and more, it will give you the confidence to do something really big, like making enough panels to give you one quarter of your home needs.

There is nothing too complicated about it, and although when you read the books they talk to you about soldering and wiring and this and that, it is actually quite simple. Do not expect that your first attempt will succeed which is why you need to start small. Once you have gotten it to work properly, you know that all you have to do is to repeat the same thing until you have as many as you need.

Lastly you will save a lot of money by making solar panels yourself. Many small panels that can power only a couple of bulbs cost more than $500 while you can make it yourself for less than $150. Just multiply this by the number of panels that you will need and you will realize the amount of savings that you can get out of doing it yourself.
