Capiz Chandelier

Chandeliers are a brilliant way to add to the décor of any room.  They lighten and brighten a room by reflecting sparkling patterns of light. Chandeliers come in many sizes and styles from simple and elegant to ornately complex.  There are many types to choose from–brass, wrought-iron, crystal, glass and capiz shell.

A capiz chandelier is one of the most affordable and prettiest chandelier’s you can choose.  The graceful movements of the chandelier while air passes through the shells radiates the light to create a beautiful shimmery effect.  Class and elegance is added to any room.

The capiz shell is a flat translucent outer shell of the windowpane oyster which are harvested from the Asian islands of the Philippines and Indonesia.  The chandeliers are made by native artisans who are expert at what they do.  These shells make an extremely beautiful chandelier.  It could function solely as a hanging ornament and be used when brilliant light is desired.

Years and years ago these shells were used to make windows because of their translucent quality.  That is where the name windowpane oyster came from.  The windows were made with small square shells which were held together by strips of wood.  Now the beautiful shells make magnificent chandeliers as the light bounces and dazzles off the shells.

Because of the simpleness, yet austere beauty of the shell chandelier, it is versatile and can go well in any room, whether it be an adorable accent in a baby’s room or an elegant piece in the dining room. There are many styles available.  It could fit your decorating scheme no matter what you are looking for–fun and relaxing, tropical, romantic, modern, or traditional.

The three tier waterfall clusters is perhaps the most extravagant.  It is made with 2 inch to 3 inch shells which are strung together using fishing line.  It is large, measuring about 6 feet in length.  However even with its size it is very affordable.  Buying a more tradition crystal chandelier this size could cost thousands.

There are smaller one tiers made with a wooden disc base.  They look very elegant and are great for over a smaller table or for an accent for a smaller room.  Two tiers are also available.

A style based on the traditional crystal chandelier shape is popular.  The shells touch but don’t overlap and this gives it a rich full look.  It can be one, two, or three tiers.

Capiz shells can be dyed and are available in many pastel colors including amber, sea green, light blue, salmon, and pink.  The way the light shines off the shells and displays shimmering color is eye-catching.
